TheUnited Nations is an inteational organization founded in 1945. It iscurrently made up of 193 Member States. The mission and work of theUnited Nations are guided by the purposes and principles contained inits founding Charter.
Due to the powers vested in its Charter and its unique inteationalcharacter, the United Nations can take action on the issues confrontinghumanity in the 21st century, such as peace and security, climatechange, sustainable development, human rights, disarmament, terrorism,humanitarian and health emergencies, gender equality, goveance, foodproduction, and more.
The UNalso provides a forum for its members to express their views in the General Assembly,the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, and other bodies andcommittees. By enabling dialogue between its members, and by hostingnegotiations, the Organization has become a mechanism for govements to findareas of agreement and solve problems together. The UN's Chief AdministrativeOfficer is the Secretary-General.
Maintain Inteational Peace and Security
The United Nations came into being in 1945, following thedevastation of the Second World War, with one central mission: the maintenanceof inteational peace and security. The UN does this by working to preventconflict; helping parties in conflict make peace; peacekeeping; and creatingthe conditions to allow peace to hold and flourish. These activities oftenoverlap and should reinforce one another, to be effective. The UN SecurityCouncil has the primary responsibility for inteational peace and security.The General Assembly and the Secretary-General play major, important, andcomplementary roles, along with other UN offices and bodies.
Security Council
The Security Council takes the lead in determining theexistence of a threat to the peace or an act of aggression. It calls upon theparties to a dispute to settle it by peaceful means and recommends methods ofadjustment or terms of settlement. Under Chapter VIIof the Charter, the Security Council can take enforcement measures to maintainor restore inteational peace and security. Such measures range from economicsanctions to inteational military action. The Council also establishes UN Peacekeeping Operations and Special Political Missions.
General Assembly
The General Assembly is the main deliberative, policymakingand representative organ of the UN. Through regular meetings, the GeneralAssembly provides a forum for Member States to express their views to theentire membership and find consensus on difficult issues. It makesrecommendations in the form of General Assembly Resolutions. Decisions onimportant questions, such as those on peace and security, admission of newmembers and budgetary matters, require a two-thirds majority, but otherquestions are decided by simple majority.
